The Boys Episodes 1 Season 1
I’m getting tired of superhero stuff. Honestly, Avengers Endgame kinda ended it for me. It was fun, I liked it, but it kinda felt like the end of that round of stuff for me. So going into this I am not expecting much.
That said, this is a take on the genre that is generally good. So far, at least. We shall see as things proceed. It’s cynical and superheroes, two things that tend to turn me off but the story and characters are interesting enough to keep me going.
This episode seems to introduce the main characters Starbright seems to be the portal character. I use that term since I don’t know a better one, but by it I mean the character that the audience kind of enters the series through. She is the wide eyed and innocent character thrust into a world of self absorbed superheroes.
Let’s be clear - none of this is new. Depicting superheroes as self centered and psychopathic is about as old as comic books. Or at least as old as the 80’s. And it’s been done better - mainly by Warren Ellis in his various series. And it’s never impressed me all that much. But it’s pulled off here with some style. The world building is pretty extensive and the characters are well done enough to maybe - MAYBE - build a series around.
We get the moving force of what might be the driving plot here. New heroine is introduced to the team of superheroes and a normal human whose girlfriend is killed by a mistake is set up as the opposing force. I assume that this will work out with these two characters slowly falling in love... hope not but we’ll see as we go.
Overall first impressions... It’s maybe okay for one episode a day but unlikely to make me want to binge on it. Yet. We will see if it improves.
